Manuscript booklet comprised of seven lists to be used for amateur fortune telling, by an unidentified compiler. The booklet is written in pen and black ink, on paper watermarked 1829. Each of the seven lists consists of 24 possible fates in response to a given topic. The first list is headed "Pick a number and I will tell you your most predominant quality" and includes answers such as "1. Sensibility ... 12. Prejudice ...15. Curiosity ..." The remaining lists are similarly organized: "Your most ardent wish ... 4. To be admired ... 12. To be witty ... 19. To keep a shop ..."; "Your favourite amusements ... 2. Riding ... 8. Drawing ... 21. Playing the harp ..."; "Gentlemen by whom you are beloved ... 1. By an old bachelor ... 3. No body ... 18. A sailor ..."; "Ladies by whom you are beloved ... 1. By an old maid ... 6. A heiress ...15. Your aunt ..."; "Whether you will marry ... 1. Very soon ...11. Your cousin ... 17. A doctor ..."; "Shall you have your wish ... 1. No, for it is vain & foolish ... 6. After many hopes & fears ...";
Bound by hand in covers made from heavy paper, bearing machine-embossed floral designs. The front cover depicts a red and yellow tulip; the back, a bouquet of morning glories. The edges of both covers are trimmed with pink ribbon, attached by hand-sewing. Presumably the embossed designs were bought commercially, and then hand-colored and assembled (with the ribbon) by the owner.
