Album of comic pen-and-ink drawings, dated from 1869 to 1873, some (perhaps all) copied from contemporary issues of Punch. A few drawings near the front of the album bear a monogram of the initials A.J.K.H. The drawings have been executed in a confident hand, on separate sheets of paper affixed to pages of the album. The drawings are small (most under 9 x 9 cm), so that the 91 compositions occupy but 24 leaves (rectos only).
Most of the drawings are uncaptioned. Some of those that do bear captions may be matched with illustrations in Punch, the prominent British weekly humor magazine. These include: "A pretty little donkey in a lion's skin" which appeared in Punch on April 30, 1870 -- "Experientia Docet" from the Punch of October 24, 1868 -- "Repose. Yes! But we are sure that if Ellen knew what a figure Frederick made of her by sprawling about on the cliff just behind her, she wouldn't be so quiet," September 13, 1862 -- "He's hit, I'm shaw," 1851 -- "The last month of Jack-fishing," March 10, 1866. Those that are not captioned and have not been matched with published counterparts are, however, very much in the same style. All of the known copies bear inscribed dates later than the original dates of publication.
This album includes the fashion caricature "The newest sea-side fish-n," a drawing also present in another album in the collections (YCBA Rare Books and Manuscripts, NC1479 .M6 1867), suggesting that this was a popular image at the time. Three of the larger (and finer) drawings are laid in: "Educated dogs" -- "Costume à la mermaid" -- "A pretty little donkey in a lion's skin."
Bound in contemporary dark green calf.
