Illustration of a common pheasant, or ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus), by an unidentified artist, late 19th century. The body of the species is formed by real bird feathers; the remainder of the picture is supplied with watercolor. The image depicts the pheasant perched upon a small stub of a tree. The back of the sheet is inscribed: "Phasianus colchicus."
A description of how to make similarly constructed pictures of birds with natural feathers is given in: Elegant arts for ladies (London : Ward and Lock, 1861).
Cased with a similar picture of a black-hooded oriole, presumably by the same creator.
