"The game of the Bee and the Butterfly has been constructed with a view to awaken and exercise the judgment of young people. At the same time, the inventor has endeavored, in the form of an amusement, to impress on the mind, the effects of the good and bad passions, as they are in action, and are daily occurring. He has, at all events, taken entirely new ground, and hopes that amongst the numerous excellent games of an educational character now before the public, one which appeals directly to the feelings, might meet with approval."--Directions, page [1].
The 32 playing cards include: 6 colored cards (butterfly, bee, bee hive, wasp, good humour, and bad humour); 26 uncolored cards depicting good and bad passions, each with a moralizing phrase.
The good passions are: Benevolence, Affection, Fortitude, Generosity, Humility, Joyousness, Kindness, Love, Modesty, Tenderness, Urbanity, and Zeal. The bad passions are: Conceit, Deceit, Envy, Excitability, Irritability, Obstinacy, Pride, Quarrelsomeness, Revenge, Selfishness, Vanity, Wrath, Wise Head, and Negligence.
