BEIN Zi +9661: Accompanied by: 54 page fragments of varrying sizes; over half have manuscript notes or markings, one has the remnants of a wax seal, and one has a portion of text and illustration from leaf i5.
This second edition is the first illustrated Canterbury tales, containing 23 woodcut illustrations, some repeated several times throughout the work. "The illustrations probably derive from a series of miniatures in manuscript of which only a few leaves survive, called the 'Oxford Fragments.'"--Paul Mellon's legacy, p. 309. See also: David R. "Nine of the twelve paper stocks ... are also found in the second edition of the Chronicles of England, dated 8 October 1482 ... Production of the Canterbury tales probably followed immediately, but there may have been some concurrent production of the two books. It seems likely that the Canterbury tales was completed early in 1483."--BM 15th cent.
