The album is apparently a parlor game, in which participants provide small watercolor sketches identifying their "likes and dislikes" in eight categories: Proverb or motto, Occupation, Favourite quality, Special aversion, Favourite place, Favourite character, Favourite animal, and Favourite dish. A preliminary leaf bears the note "Painted 1872." The watercolors are in varying degrees of artistic skill or flair, and some are satirical. Nine of the ten participants are unidentified. One entry (leaf 9) is signed "J.C. Walford."
The fourth leaf serves as a decipherable example. The drawings are as follows: Proverb or motto: illustration of "A bird in the hand ..." -- Occupation: a painter at an easel -- Favourite quality: a woman (Joan of Arc?) at the stake -- Special aversion: a weather vane -- Favourite place: an alpine scene -- Favourite character: a nun in wimple -- Favourite animal: a slumbering cat -- Favourite dish: a sea turtle.
The leaves of the album are printed with a grid of eight boxes (each 6.2 x 6.2 cm) in which to draw the given topics; each box is headed by the name of a topic. Most of the participants drew watercolors directly within the boxes provided; two worked on separate sheets of paper, which were subsequently trimmed and pasted into the appropriate boxes.
On wove paper watermarked J. Whatman, 1870.
Bound in contemporary green cloth. Title ("My likes an dislikes") stamped in gold on front cover.
