Thomas's marriage to Baroness Frederica Hildprant (of Battera and Slabez, in the Kingdom of Bohemia ), on 13 April 1846 in Tooting, Surrey, was announced in The Economist. His wife died the following year, and in September 1848 he bought the Schloss Hard estate at Ermatingen from Lady Mina Lindsay following the death of her husband General Thomas Lindsay. A man of considerable wealth, he also bought Castle Wolfsberg, and in the 1860s built Castle Müllberg (municipality of Raperswilen). His father, Rees Goring Thomas, of Carmarthen, owned slave plantations in Jamaica, and was until 1837 a partner in the bank Sir James Esdaile & Co.
Two passport wallets for George Treherne Thomas. The primary wallet begins with an engraved passport form, completed in manuscript, dated 12 January 1839; it is issued and signed by Palmerston. Leaves in the remainder of the wallet contain numerous stamped and manuscript endorsements from locations throughout the Continent, from Spain to Russia, dated from 1839 to 1845. Midway through the wallet is a second printed passport, completed in manuscript, in German and in French, providing for free travel throughout the Austrian states and Italy. It was issued 16 April 1842, at London, under the authority of Philippe Baron de Neumann. Loosely inserted near the end of the wallet are two smaller printed forms, completed in manuscript at Barcelona, in July, 1845, one of which grants Thomas passage to Málaga. The second, smaller, wallet bears endorsements from 1845 to 1865, primarily in the Austrian states and Switzerland.
The passports are accompanied by a marriage certificate between Hugh Treherne (aged 55) and Annie Ashford (48), both of Pierre Percée Lodge, St. Peter Port, Island of Guernsey. The certificate was issued by the Registrar's Office in the Parish of Saint Peter Port on 20 January 1920.
Both passports are in contemporary wallet style bindings, with flaps intact. Both bear the gilt-stamped name of George Treherne Thomas.
