The mount bears three annotations in ink on the verso: "Cheltenham College, 13 May 1845" (subsequently crossed out); "B. Jones junr."; and "26 June 1851." The annotations suggest that the photographer is Baynahm Jones (1806-1890), a lawyer and amateur photographer at Cheltenham. He is described in John Werge's The evolution of photography (London: Piper & Carter, 1890), pages 123-124 : "Mr. Baynham Jones was an enthusiastic photographer from the very first, for in 1839, as soon as Daguerre's process was published, he made himself a camera out of a cigar-box and the lens of his opera glass, and being unable to obtain a Daguerreotype plate in the country, he cut up a silver salver and worked away on a solid silver plate until he succeeded in making a Daguerreotype picture ..." In the 1850s and a1860s Jones was a frequent exhibitor of calotypes. The image's connection to Cheltenham College is unclear. Cheltenham Ladies' College was not founded until 1854. The neighboring boys' school started in 1841.
The group portrait depicts five unidentified women of varied ages: the oldest woman (the family matriarch?) is surrounded by three young women and a little girl, all shown full-figure.
