Scrapbook of newspaper clippings, broadsides, and pamphlets, concerning the Richmondshire (England) region between 1857 and 1880, with a concentration of material from 1863 to 1865 relating to the 15th North York Rifle Volunteers, as well as the Richmond Mechanics' Institute and the Richmond Naturalists' Club. The clippings, etc., are pasted neatly into an album of large blue-tinted paper, frequently three newspaper columns to a page, with most of the clippings headed by the date (clipped) of the article's appearance. Slightly less than half of the items concern the 15th North York Rifle Volunteers, a group formed in 1860 and headquartered at Richmond. Related material includes broadsides announcing shooting competitions, abstracts of income and expenditure, company orders, notices of promotions and deaths, and broadsides announcing balls to be hosted by the volunteer corps. There is a secondary concentration of material concerning the Richmond Naturalists' Club, with announcements and reviews of lectures, etc. Similar material is present concerning the Richmond Mechanics' Institute, with several broadsides concerning a trip made by members of the Institute to see the 1862 International Exhibition in London. Other material in the scrapbook records assorted Richmond activity, including cricket matches, church restorations, choral and other entertainments, the Richmond Grammar School, the town council and politics, and occasional Richmond crime.
The scrapbook was possibly compiled by Edward Wood, (1808-1877), who had connections to a number of the institutions featured in the scrapbook. He was founder and president of the Richmond Naturalists' Club, and there are notices in the scrapbook relating to his geological lectures, as well as a notice about the sale (ca. 1879) of Wood's important collection of geological specimens, which would end up at the Richmond Institute. Wood was also a president of the Richmond Mechanics' Institute and led their trip to the 1862 Exposition. Some of the notices concerning the rifle volunteers list an E. Wood (ensign), although this may have been Wood's son of the same name. A number of clippings pertain to Wood's native Reeth and Swaledale regions of Richmondshire.
